Football is Back!!! Hail to the Redskins!!!

Because of the horror that occurred on this day 10 years ago, today is bittersweet, but football is back, and it’s part of what makes America great. My season doesn’t start until 4:15 PM ET when my Washington Redskins take on the New York Football Giants. If you’re wondering why Chris Berman calls then the New York Football Giants, it’s because that’s the legal corporate name of the team.) If you’re wondering why I call them my Washington Redskins, well, it’s official. (Originally, the interviewer, Hamil Harris, wrote “the Redskins,” but I said, “No, I said MY Redskins!” He underlined the word “my” three times to make sure it went into the article.)

The Redskins have a young squad because — finally — the team is building correctly through the draft. This relative inexperience could result in a losing season, but I’m hopeful it won’t. We have excellent coaching, and with London Fletcher and others, we have superb veteran leadership to keep the team in line emotionally and educate them on how to play the game. There’s no sense in speculating further. I’ll leave that to the talking heads. The season will play out as it plays out. Meanwhile, I’ll enjoy football, and not just Redskins games, but all games. As a native East Coaster, I always find a way to root for one team or the other. It’s part of my argumentative nature.

Now, for my fellow Redskins fans, I have only one small request: Learn the damn song! Everyone knows the first half of the song, but them mumbles through the rest until we get to “Rah! Rah! Rah!” It’s embarrassing, and it causes me such a headache when fans of other teams laugh at me because they know that I know what it says about the fan base. Really, it’s not that hard to learn. To help you in this regard, I give you the greatest fight song ever written — everyone else in the NFL is a Johnny-come-lately wannabe).

Hail to the Redskins!
