MMA Journalists should take lesson from HBO’s the Newsroom

The new HBO drama, the Newsroom, has quickly become one of my favorites. I’m sure a real newsroom isn’t this dramatic, but it’s a TV show, so give it a break. It’s a show about integrity’s battle with sensationalism in the news media. The last episode dealt specifically with the integrity-warrior main character, Will McAvoy (played by Jeff Daniels) refusing to go with the crowd (FoxNews, CNN, and MSNBC) and declare Rep. Gabrielle Giffords dead when there was no actual confirmation. For those not living under a rock, you know that McAvoy (a fictional character) was vindicated when Rep. Giffords (a real-world Congresswoman in a real-world story) survived.

Making up bullshit in the off chance it might turn out to be correct just to be able to say you got there first? Yeah, that sounds familiar. MMA Journalists should take a lesson from the Newsroom. (Of course, all journalists should take that lesson.)
